Above is Charly's dam,
Hun CH Borsikai Selymes Karila (better known as Masni),
who carries a Russian/Hungarian pedigree and was
Dog of the Year in Hungary in 1996.

Dog of the Year 1998 in Hungary

Charly came to Bydand as a promising adolescent in December of 1998, and easily finished his championship with a Best of Breed under Roy Holloway in the spring of 99, defeated only twice in the classes and with several Best of Breed wins over specials. His chief virtues are his correct head and Havanese expression, his silky, jet-black “wash and wear” coat, his lovely shoulders and nicely arched neck. He is extremely clean coming and going, and his side gait displays balanced reach and drive with the typical Havanese spring. His tail is carried in a black silky plume over his back, and with his high head carriage completes an elegant picture in motion.

Charly stands 10 ½ inches at the shoulder, 11 inches at the rump, and weighs 12 pounds. He measures 11 inches from the top of shoulder to the set-on of tail.

Charly's temperament is both calm and outgoing, and he is affectionate to both friends and strangers alike. Unlike most stud dogs of our acquaintance, he displays a particular fondness for puppies, with whom he is extremely tolerant, much to the detriment of his head furnishings. He is a housedog with good manners and full-time house privileges, and the word that best describes him is "sweet." As far as we know, Charly has never so much as growled in his entire life, even when being annoyed by younger males and puppies.

(Panda & Charly)

As a sire, Charly is entirely homozygous for the desirable characteristics he displays, and passes them on to his offspring. However, conformation and temperament are only two of three components critical to a good stud dog- the third is robust health, and freedom from genetic disorders. Charly's health is entirely robust. At 8 ½ years of age he is still an HCA 4 Star Dog, with a flawless 6/6 scissors bite, and normal cardiac and liver function. In fact, Charly has never suffered from so much as an ear infection in his life- he may be the flat-out healthiest dog we have ever owned!

Even more importantly, he has more health-screened offspring than any Havanese in the breed -this can be verified by doing a quick search at www.offa.org, and then clicking on his name where indicated on his page, which will reveal his offspring and the results of their health-screening.

Charly is currently standing at stud to approved bitches. We require soaped photos, so that we may help to ascertain whether or not he can complement a particular bitch's strengths and weaknesses, as no dog is the right choice for every bitch. An AKC championship is not required- a good temperament, general soundness, and complete health-screening, however, (including CHIC certification and an SA 320 to assess kidney and liver function), most definitely are!

Charly has sired two of the last four HCA National Specialty Sweepstakes winners, CH Deja's Good to the Last Drop (bred by Mary Ellen Vickery) in 2001, and CH Bydand Jumpin' Jack Flash in 2002. Both dogs went on to become multiple Group winners.

"Java"

They have since been joined by CH Bydand Flashy Pride, BISS CH Bydand Elfin Magic CGC, ROM (co-bred with Joanne Baldwin DVM), and CH Feliz Perla de last Antillas CGC (bred by Bob and Beth Johnson) in the ranks of Group-winning Havanese sired by Charly.

"Keebler"

"Pearlie"

Charly himself has been entered in only two dog shows since finishing his championship in 1999- once in the 2003 HCA National Specialty, where he won the Stud Dog Class, and the second time in the 2005 HCA National, where he did it again. (Charly stayed home in 2004 and let his son Keebler win the Stud Dog Class that year.)

Charly's success in, and impact on, the Havanese breed is due to many, many people- to Maria Saloman for producing him, to Jerome Podell for having had the vision and foresight to import him, to all the breeders who put their faith in this unknown “mutt” from Hungary, and to all the owners of “Charly kids” who have gone the extra mile to both show and health-screen his many lovely offspring. Thank you all so very much.
